Antigua and Barbuda: Population and Cities

Population

Population

According to Countryaah website, about 95,000 people live in Antigua and Barbuda. Most of them can be found in Antigua, whereas Barbuda only has about 1,800 residents and Redonda is completely uninhabited.

Antigua and Barbuda: Population and Cities

Due to the relatively low birth rate, the natural population growth is quite low.

What is still quite interesting: Antigua and Barbuda was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the country that would be most willing to marry. In addition, the country has the lowest suicide rate in an international comparison.

Ethnic groups

The population of Antigua and Barbuda consists of about 91% of black Africans and about 3.7% of mixed race. Some Europeans and Asians also live in the country.

Religions

The main religion in the state is Christianity, to which about 87% profess. 74% of them are Protestants (32% Anglicans, 12% Moravians, 9% Methodists and 9% 7-day Adventists), 11% Catholics, 1% Jehovah's Witnesses, 1% Rastafarians and 1% others.

National languages

English is the official language. In addition, a Creole language based on English is spoken.

Capital

The capital of Antigua and Barbuda is Saint John's with a population of approximately 30,000. The city spreads in the northwest of the island of Antigua and borders a strait of the Caribbean Sea. The island nation's largest city was founded in 1632 and is the country's commercial center. The most outstanding attraction in the city is Saint John's Cathedral. It also dominates the Saint John's silhouette.

Antigua Barbuda: map

Defined by DigoPaul, the islands of Antigua and Barbuda are located in the southeast of Puerto Rico, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean.

Antigua Barbuda: map

Antigua and Barbuda together cover an area of around 442 km², with Antigua around 280 km² and Barbuda around 160 km². The rest is spread over a few tiny islands. The two main islands of Antigua and Barbuda extend over an area of 442 km². They were created by deposits of limestone sediments. The small volcanic island of Redonda also belongs to the island state.

Islands, length of coast

  • Antigua with a size of 280 km²
  • Barbuda with a size of 161 km²
  • Redonda with a size of 1.5 km²

Antigua and Barbuda has a sea coast with a total length of around 153 km.

Tidal range

In Saint John's the mean tidal range is around 1.5 m.

Compare

Incidentally, the world's highest tidal range can be found in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where it is up to 16 meters, and at spring tide even over 20 meters. The Bay of Fundy is located on the Atlantic between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which is called Nova Scotia in German and whose capital is Halifax. On the German North Sea coast it varies between one and three meters. In the western Baltic Sea, on the other hand, the tidal range is only 0.3 meters, while it is barely noticeable in the eastern Baltic Sea.

Longitude and latitude

Antigua and Barbuda extends over the following geographical latitude (abbreviation Δφ) and geographical longitude (abbreviation Δλ):

Δφ = from 16 55 'to 17 45' north latitude

Δλ = from 61 40 'to 62 20' west longitude

You can find detailed information on this subject under Longitude and Latitude.

Legal time

For Saint John's, the following value applies to Central European Time (CET), i.e. the time without summer time. A minus sign means that it is earlier there and a plus sign that it is later than after CET:

Δt (CET) = - 5 h

Further and detailed explanations of the time can be found under Time zones, time.

The highest point of the sun in Saint John's

Saint John's lies at a north latitude of around φ = 17 , it is thus within the tropics. If the declination of the sun has the value δ = 17 N, and thus the image point of the sun is exactly above the city or island, the sun is perpendicular there. This happens exactly twice a year, roughly 25 days before June 21st and then again 25 days after June 21st.

Attention

If the image point of the sun and thus the declination δ is north of the latitude of Saint John's, the sun is not in the south at noon, as in our latitudes, but in the north. In this case, the sun moves from east to north to west, where, like us, it sets.

Mountains, lakes

Boggy Peak

The highest point on the islands is Boggy Peak with a height of 405 m.

Potsworks Damms

The country includes several smaller lakes. The largest lake is the reservoir of the Potsworks Dam with a capacity of 4.5 billion liters of water.

Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean

As already mentioned, the state of Antigua and Barbuda borders the Caribbean in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east.
