Amazon State University. It is a Brazilian public university operated by the state of Amazonas, Brazil, located in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. It was established in 2001 by a state law that changed the Amazonas University of Technology (UTAM or Universidade de Tecnologia do Amazonas, in Portuguese) to the UEA.

Historical review

The Amazonas State University was previously called the Amazonas University of Technology (in Portuguese, Universidade de Tecnologia do Amazonas or UTAM). It was established by state law on December 14, 1972. A later law, of October 10, 1977, changed the university into an institute, but it was called university.

The creation of UTAM started with an educational policy, created by the Government of the State of Amazonas, which observed the insufficiency of technicians for the industry.

Since its foundation in 1973, UTAM has offered courses in Operational Engineering (Wood, Mechanical, Electronic and Electro-technical), Mechanical Maintenance, Civil Construction, Topography and Infrastructure. In 1977, the Ministry of Education abolished the Operational Engineering course so UTAM administrators began to offer Technology courses at a Higher level. In 1986, UTAM began an Engineering course. The data processing course started in 1992 and the computer engineering course had been started in 1997.

In 2001 the Amazonas government signed a law that changed the Amazonas University of Technology to the Amazonas State University. It has 17 campuses in 17 cities in Amazonas. In 2011 it was one of the best universities in the northern region of Brazil, according to an examination by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, called ENADE.

With the opening of the Río Negro bridge, the government of Amazonas presented a construction project for the University City in the municipality of Iranduba, located on the other bank of the Río Negro, within the metropolitan area of Manaus. The reserved area is located 7 km from the bridge and has 10,000 hectares. In 2011 the topographical studies were carried out and after the completion of the works, all the courses will be transferred to this new campus. The project also included a university hospital.
