With the family to Australia to study
If you want to avoid homesickness while studying in Australia, you can be accompanied by selected family members. This can be the partner as well as your own or your stepchildren. An applicant’s partner can even study in Australia for three months. If you travel to Australia with your family, of course, this also has an impact on the conditions that must be met in order to obtain a visa. These include, for example, the financial requirements. The processing fee for the visa will also increase. Families should inform themselves in advance about the visa conditions in order to avoid problems with the visa later.
Work permit in Australia
A work permit is already included in the student visas for Australia. Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week during the semester. The examination phases are also part of the semester. Even in the event that one takes courses during a break in the main course that are counted towards the course, the maximum permitted working hours must not be exceeded. The same applies in the event that the studies at the Australian university have been completed, but the Confirmation of Enrollment is still in force. In this latter case, there is an exception for Master-by-Research and Ph.D. students who have submitted their thesis for evaluation. There are no working hours during the semester break. Work that is formally part of the course is not included in the 20 hours. In many cases, this does not include voluntary, unpaid work.

In order to work in Australia, students and any working family members need a tax number ( Tax File Number ). You can apply for this at the Australian Taxation Office. The work permit only starts when the studies begin.

Family members are allowed to work 20 hours a week once the visa holder’s studies begin. If the student is completing a master’s or doctoral degree, there is no working time limit for family members from the start of the course.
For short stays in Australia: alternatives to the student visa
For study stays of up to three months, students can also enter with a visitor visa instead of a student visa. The Electronic Travel Authority ( subclass 601) and the eVisitor visa ( subclass 651) are eligible. All information about these visas can be found on the website of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
For a semester abroad, a Working Holiday Visa ( subclass 417) may be an alternative to a student visa.
Since there are differences between these visas and a student visa for Australia, for example with regard to health insurance, students should inform themselves in advance about the visa. You should also clarify with the university of your choice in Australia to what extent it is possible to study there with these visas.
If you are traveling via Asian countries on your way back from Australia, you should find out about the entry requirements there beforehand.
Language admission requirements for studying in Australia
Applicants to study in Australia must demonstrate a sufficient command of English. This evidence is usually provided through minimum points in a standardized language test. The most common English language tests are:
- TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language )
- IELTS ( International English Language Testing System )
Some universities also accept other language tests such as the Cambridge CAE or CPE.
The number of points required in the language tests varies depending on the university, level of study and course of study.
Those who do not meet the language requirements often have the opportunity to take a preparatory language course in Australia. This way, prospective students can catch up on their language qualifications.
Alternatives to TOEFL and IELTS
For a semester abroad in Australia, the universities often also accept the DAAD language certificate as proof of language proficiency, sometimes in combination with the English grade on the Abitur certificate. At some universities it is also possible to prove language skills only with the English grade on the Abitur certificate.
