Capital and other cities
Maseru
Lesotho’s main city and the only major city with around 270,000 residents, Maseru extends along the Caledon River in the west of the country. The relatively modern city is not necessarily very worth seeing for tourists, because it is more the economic and infrastructural center of Lesotho. But there are some colonial buildings to visit in the city center, of which the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories is certainly the most impressive. In addition to the Royal Palace of King Letsie III, the State House, the modern national stadium and of course the parliament building, the National University of Lesotho and the country’s international airport, Moshoeshoe I. International Airport, can be found in Maseru. Also of interest is the grand stand, which was used for the visit of Pope John Paul II. In the vicinity of the city you can visit numerous rock caves in which cave paintings of the San have been preserved, mainly depicting hunters and their prey.

The highest point of the sun in Maseru
Maseru lies at a southern latitude of around φ = 29.5 °.
If the sun or its image point is at the southern tropic, i.e. at δ = 23.5 °, summer starts in Maseru, this is December 21st. Then, for the highest position of the sun at noon, according to Eq. 1 (see position of the sun):
-29.5 ° = – (90 ° – h) + -23.5 °
so:
H = 84 ° |
With 84 ° the sun in Maseru has the highest level of the entire year above the horizon (more precisely: above the horizon).
Caution
The image point of the sun and thus its declination is north of the latitude of Maseru all year round. Therefore the sun is not there at noon in the south, as in our latitudes, but in the north. In this case, the sun moves from east to north to west, where, like us, it sets.
