Population

According to Countryaah website, Malta has around 419,000 residents. Due to its small area, the country is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and has one of the highest population densities in the world.

The island of Gozo has about 30,000 residents and only 4 people live on Comino. Another 400,000 or so Maltese live abroad.

Ethnic composition

About 96% of the country’s residents are Maltese, another 2% are British.

Religion

About 97% of the Maltese population are Catholic Christians. There are also minorities of Protestants, Orthodox and Jews.

According to the constitution, Catholicism is the state religion of the Maltese people.

National languages

The country’s official languages are Maltese (a Semitic language interspersed with Arabic and Romance vocabulary) and English. Italian is used as the colloquial language.

General

Malta, the smallest European island state, is located in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the North African coast. The island state has become known to some through the Order of Malta.

The Republic of Malta covers a total of 316 km² – with around 434,000 residents. The capital is Valletta.

Islands that make up the state

The island state of Malta consists of the following six islands:

Malta with an area of about 246 km²

– Gozo (Ghawdex) with an area of about 67 km²

– Comino (Kemmuna) with an area of about 3 km²

– and the tiny uninhabited islands of Cominotto (Kemmunett), Filfla (Filfola) and St. Pauls Island.

Around 37% of the land is used as arable land or fields, especially for growing potatoes, and also for tomatoes, onions and flowers.

Compare

The world’s highest tidal range can be found in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where it is up to 16 m, and at spring tide even over 20 m. The Bay of Fundy is located on the Atlantic between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which is called Nova Scotia in German and whose capital is Halifax. On the German North Sea coast it varies between 1 m and 3 m. In the western Baltic Sea, on the other hand, the tidal range is only 0.3 m, while it is barely noticeable in the eastern Baltic Sea.

The highest point of the sun in Valletta

Valletta lies at a north latitude of around φ = 36 °.

Mountains, elevations

Dingli cliffs

The highest elevations on Malta are the Dingli cliffs (Ta ‘Dmejrek or Dingli Cliffs) with a height of 253 m.

Rivers and lakes

There are no rivers or lakes to speak of in Malta.

“Chadwich Lake” describes a valley where rainwater is collected in several small basins between autumn and spring.

Malta is one of the most arid countries in the world. The drinking water is mainly obtained with the help of seawater desalination plants.

Malta is about 90 km south of Sicily – in the middle of the Mediterranean.
