Federated States of Micronesia: Geography

Areas and archipelagos

The Federated States of Micronesia cover a total area of 702 km². Due to its island location, the state has no national borders with other states. Check topmbadirectory for politics, flags, famous people, animals and plants of Micronesia.

The state consists of four archipelagos with a total of 607 islands, with a coastline of around 6,112 km.

The four archipelagos extend from west to east:

  • Yap, with 11,900 residents and an area of 119 km² and 145 islands
  • Chuuk, with approx. 55,000 residents and an area of 127 km² and 294 islands
  • Pohnpei, with approx. 45,900 residents and an area of 344 km² and 163 islands
  • Kosrae, with about 15,000 residents and an area of 110 km² and 5 islands

Chuuk was occupied by the Japanese and as a result was attacked by the Americans on February 17 and 18, 1944. During the bombardment, over 50 warships sank in the archipelago of the same name, and Japan lost around 400 aircraft and around 4,000 soldiers. The ships, which were sunk at the time and are now covered with coral, have become an Eldorado for divers. The divers are a not inconsiderable source of income for the local people.

Legal time

For the Federated States of Micronesia, the value given below applies to Central European Time (CET), i.e. the time without summer time in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A minus sign means that it is earlier there and a plus sign that it is later than after CET:

Δt (CET): Yap and Chuuk + 9 h Δt (CET): Pohnpei and Kosrae + 10 h

Further and detailed explanations of the time can be found under Time zones, time.

The highest point of the sun in Palikir

Palikir lies at a northern latitude of around φ = 07 ° and thus in the middle of the tropics.

If the declination δ of the sun has the value 07 ° N and the image point of the sun is above the city or the island, the sun is standing there perpendicular. This happens exactly twice a year, roughly 27 days after March 21st and 27 days before September 21st.

Attention

If the declination δ of the sun is north of the latitude of Palikir, the sun is not in the south at noon, as in our latitudes, but in the north. In this case, the sun moves from east to north to west, where, like us, it sets.
