Pitcairn: Geography and Map
The Pitcairn Islands consist of four very small islands in the middle of the eastern Pacific on a western longitude between about 124 ° to 131 ° and a southern latitude between 23 ° and 26 °. Check topmbadirectory for politics, flags, famous people, animals and plants of Pitcairn.
The four islands of the Pitcairn archipelago cover a total area of 43 km², of which Pitcairn itself with 4.5 km², Henderson with 37 km² and approx. 200 km east-northeast of Pitcairn, Oeno 0.65 km², approx. 120 km northwest from Pitcairn and Ducie 0.7 km² located around 470 km east of Pitcairn. Pitcairn itself is a volcanic island with a highest elevation of 335 m above sea level. Ducie and Oeno are coral atolls with a maximum height above sea level of around 4 m. Henderson is a limestone atoll with a maximum height of 33 m and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
The island of Pitcairn is a relatively small island and has a coastline to the Pacific of around 55 km.
Tidal range in Pitcairn
In Pitcairn the mean tidal range is up to 2.50 m.
Compare
The world’s highest tidal range can be found in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where it is up to 16 m, and at spring tide even over 20 m. The Bay of Fundy is located on the Atlantic between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which is called Nova Scotia in German and whose capital is Halifax.
On the German North Sea coast it varies between 1 m and 3 m. In the western Baltic Sea, on the other hand, the tidal range is only 0.3 m, while in the eastern Baltic Sea it is barely noticeable.
Longitude and latitude
Pitcairn and the three islands belonging to it are roughly on the following latitude (abbrev. Φ) and longitude (abbrev. Λ):
φ = from about 23 ° to 26 ° S λ = from about 124 ° to 131 ° W |
You can find detailed information on this subject under Longitude and Latitude.
Legal time
For Pitcairn, the following value applies to Central European Time (CET), i.e. the time (without summer time). A minus sign means that it is earlier there and a plus sign that it is later than after CET:
Δt (CET) = – 9 h |
Further and detailed explanations of the time can be found under Time zones, time.
The highest point of the sun in Pitcairn
Pitcairn itself lies on a southern latitude of around φ = – 25 ° and thus just outside the tropics. If the sun is at the tropic, it has a declination of δ = -23.5 °, that is on December 21st. Then, for the highest position of the sun at noon, according to Eq. 1 (see position of the sun):
– 25 ° = – (90 ° – h) + -23.5 °
so:
h = 88.5 ° |

Pawala Valley Ridge
The highest point on the Pitcairn Islands is the Pawala Valley Ridge with a height of 347 m.
