The county was established in 1837 and named after Johann de Kalb, who was a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The area was originally inhabited by Potawatomi Indians before white settlers began to arrive in the 1830s. The first settlement in DeKalb County was at Sycamore, which incorporated as a village in 1858 and became a city just three years later. Sycamore was an early hub of activity for the county due to its location on two important railroads: The Chicago & North Western Railway and The Chicago Great Western Railway. In recent decades, however, much of this agricultural activity has declined due to increased development in DeKalb County. Today, DeKalb County remains an important part of northern Illinois with its diverse economy and vibrant cultural scene playing an important role in the lives of its residents. From bustling cities such as Sycamore to small towns such as Malta or Shabbona Park, DeKalb County has something for everyone. DeKalb County is a diverse area, with many different school districts serving the communities within the county. The DeKalb County Community School District 428 serves the city of DeKalb, as well as parts of Sycamore, Cortland, and Genoa. This district offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes math, science, language arts, social studies, and electives in art, music and physical education. In addition to its academic offerings, the district also provides various extracurricular activities and clubs for students to partake in. These activities are designed to foster social-emotional development as well as academic achievement. The district also supports a variety of athletics programs that offer students the opportunity to participate in competitive sports such as football, basketball, soccer and track & field. Additionally, the district provides services such as counseling and special education programs for students with disabilities or special needs. Furthermore, DeKalb County Community School District 428 has adopted several initiatives to promote college readiness among its student population. These initiatives include providing access to college-level courses for qualified students through dual credit partnerships with local colleges and universities.
