According to topmbadirectory, Dubois County, Indiana has a long and storied history that dates back to its establishment as a county in 1818. Originally part of Knox County, it was named after Toussaint Dubois, a French-Canadian fur trader and political leader who had an influential role in the early development of the region. The county was home to several Native American tribes prior to European settlement. Following the Treaty of St. Mary’s in 1818, the area was opened up for settlement by settlers from Ohio and other eastern states. By 1820, Dubois County had its own government established and began to grow rapidly as German immigrants moved into the area seeking economic opportunity. The agricultural economy of Dubois County flourished during this period thanks to the fertile soil found in abundance throughout the region. The population grew steadily over time as more immigrants moved into the area, many of whom were Catholic or Lutheran. In addition to agriculture, industry also began to develop in the county with several sawmills and flour mills being established throughout the 19th century. By 1900, manufacturing had become a major part of Dubois County’s economy with companies such as Kimball Piano Factory and Perfection Biscuit Company setting up shop in Jasper. Other industries such as automotive parts manufacturing have also established roots in Dubois County over time, further bolstering its economy. Dubois County, Indiana is home to a total of six public school districts. The largest of these is Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools which serves over 5,000 students across six campuses. The district was formed in 1962 when the Jasper and Ireland School Corporations merged and has since become a leader in providing quality educational opportunities for the students of Dubois County. In addition, the district also offers dual credit courses in partnership with local colleges as well as Advanced Placement classes to help prepare students for college success. The second largest school district in Dubois County is Northeast Dubois County School Corporation which serves over 2,400 students across four schools.
