The county was originally part of York County when it was established in 1760. In 1805, Cumberland County was created from portions of York and Lincoln Counties. The county is named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, who was a British general during the Seven Years’ War. The Falmouth School Department serves the town of Falmouth and its surrounding areas with five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The Windham-Raymond School District serves the towns of Windham and Raymond with five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The district also offers specialized programs such as advanced placement courses as well as vocational training for interested students.
