According to topmbadirectory, Lake County, Oregon is situated in the south-central region of the state and is home to over 8,000 people. The county covers an area of 2,955 square miles and is bordered by Deschutes County to the north, Klamath County to the east, Harney County to the southeast, Grant County to the south, and Crook and Jefferson Counties to the west. The history of Lake County dates back thousands of years when Native Americans inhabited much of what is now Oregon. The Klamath and Modoc tribes were among those that lived in Lake County prior to European settlement. In 1846 Peter Skene Ogden became one of the first non-Indigenous people to explore the area that would become Lake County. In 1864 Lake County was officially established by an act of Congress with its county seat located in Linkville (now Klamath Falls). In 1867 a group of settlers from Iowa arrived in Lake County and founded a community known as Silver Creek. It was one of many towns that sprang up during this time period as settlers moved into the area seeking land and opportunity. Other towns included Adel, Paisley, Christmas Valley, Fort Rock and Summer Lake. In 1895 a dam was built on Silver Creek creating what is now known as Silver Lake Reservoir. This provided irrigation water for local farms and ranches which helped spur economic growth in the area. By 1900 there were nearly 1,500 residents living in what is now known as Lake County with most settling near Silver Creek or along other waterways such as Summer Lake or Christmas Valley Creek. Ranching has long been an important part of life in Lake County with many families raising cattle on their homesteads or leasing land from larger ranches such as La Pine Ranches which has been operating since 1906. Tourism has also become increasingly important over recent decades with visitors flocking to enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting and camping at places like Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge or Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge which are both located within county boundaries. Today’s economy continues to be largely driven by ranching but also includes tourism, agriculture (hay production), light manufacturing (wood products) and government services (education). Although small compared with other counties in Oregon it remains one of the most beautiful places to visit or live offering its residents breathtaking views along with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities throughout all four seasons.
