According to topmbadirectory, Charles City County is a historic county located in eastern Virginia. It was first established in 1619, making it one of the oldest counties in the United States. The county is named after Charles I of England, who granted the Charter of Carolina to eight of his loyal supporters in 1663. Charles City County was one of the original eight shires of Virginia and was established as a county shortly after its settlement. The county was home to several important historical figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler and Robert E. Lee. In 1782, Charles City County played an important role in the American Revolution when it served as the site for General George Washington’s surrender to Lord Cornwallis during the Battle of Yorktown. During this period, Charles City County was an agricultural area with tobacco being its primary crop for export. After the Civil War, African Americans were able to acquire land and began farming in larger numbers which further increased agricultural production. During this period, many freed slaves left for cities such as Richmond and Petersburg while others stayed to work on farms and help build new communities throughout Charles City County. The county is home to several historical sites such as Berkeley Plantation (the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison), Shirley Plantation (the oldest family-owned plantation in America) and Westover Plantation (the former residence of William Byrd II). There are also several museums devoted to local history within Charles City County including The American Civil War Museum at Historic Tutter’s Neck and The Old Church Museum at Historic Shirley Plantation. In addition to these attractions, there are also numerous parks, recreational areas, golf courses and nature preserves located throughout the county that offer visitors a chance to explore its rich history and natural beauty.
