According to topmbadirectory, Florence County, Wisconsin is located in the northern part of the state and is bordered by Iron County to the north and Forest County to the east. The county was established in 1882 and named after Florence Gashwiler, the daughter of a prominent local lumberman. It covers an area of 1,072 square miles and has a population of 4,723 people. The first inhabitants of Florence County were Native Americans who lived in the area for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. The Ojibwe were the most numerous tribe in the region and they had several villages along what is now known as Big Muskie Creek. French fur traders began exploring the region in 17th century but it wasn’t until 1842 that permanent settlers arrived in what would become Florence County. These settlers were mostly lumbermen from New England who came to take advantage of the vast stands of pine trees that covered much of Wisconsin at that time. They built sawmills along many rivers throughout Florence County and soon began exporting their lumber to markets all over North America. This period saw great growth for both Florence County, which became one of Wisconsin’s wealthiest counties, as well as for its logging industry which made Florence one of Wisconsin’s leading exporters during this time. The logging industry eventually declined due to over-harvesting but by then other industries had taken its place such as farming, mining and tourism. Farming was especially important during this period as it provided much needed jobs for locals while producing food for both local consumption and export markets around Wisconsin and beyond. Mining also played an important role during this period with copper being mined near Fence Lake while iron ore was mined near Iron Mountain. Today, Florence County remains a largely rural community with agriculture still playing an important role in its economy alongside tourism which has grown significantly over recent years due to its many scenic attractions such as Big Muskie Creek, Lake Emily and Fence Lake State Park among others. It also boasts some unique attractions such as a replica log cabin village at Camp Five Museum which showcases traditional logging techniques used by early settlers while providing visitors with a glimpse into life during that era.
