For engineering students, a master’s or doctoral degree lead to careers in research, teaching or private industry. Engineering schools range from small to large and the public to the private, and each have their own specialties. Each year, U.s. News and World Report produces a list ranking the country’s top engineering schools as well as top programs in various engineering subspecialties.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Classified as the top graduate engineering school in the country, MIT has no shortage of notable programs. Students in the famous aviation and space Department works with researchers from NASA and the U.s. Air Force on projects such as the design of new space vehicles, while chemical engineering students can choose to specialize in areas such as polymers, nanostructures and environmental engineering.
Stanford University
In accordance with its Silicon Valley location, Stanford University offers a variety of top-rated high-tech programs. Established in 2004, the atmosphere and the Energy program focuses on exploring environmentally friendly energy sources. Similarly, sustainable design and construction program educates students in green building practices. In the computer science Department, students can specialize in areas such as artificial intelligence, security, and database systems.
University of California-Berkeley
Rated as the top public university engineering program, UC Berkeley has also been recognized for its excellent electrical engineering department. Electrical engineering PhD student can choose from a wide range of subject areas, including energy science and new media. Students in top-rated environmental engineering program are encouraged to expand their studies with courses in subjects such as biology, mechanical engineering and public health.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Georgia Tech is the top ranked engineering school in the southern United States and home to the top-ranked Industrial Engineering Department. The Department offers master’s degrees in areas ranging from supply chain technology to operations research and industrial engineering doctoral students can choose from specializations such as statistics and economic analysis. In the highly-ranked Biomedical Engineering Department, students can enroll in a common ph. d. program with China’s Peking University.
University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign

Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon, Carnegie Institute of Technology has a number of interdisciplinary engineering master degrees. For example, the one-year graduate program in Product Development combines courses in technical design with classes on market research and entrepreneurship. Architecture-engineering construction management master’s degree is a joint degree between the Civil Engineering Department and school of architecture and includes a summer internship for students without prior work experience.
California Institute of Technology
The California Institute of Technology, also known as Cal Tech, is known for its small size and high caliber scholars. Students in the chemical engineering programs focus on the areas of kinetics, thermodynamics and transport phenomena; each student is also required to extend their education with a minor in a non-engineering subject. Similarly, mechanical engineering graduate students take almost half of their courses in mathematics or other technical disciplines.
University of Texas-Austin
One of the most famous departments at the University of Texas ‘ flagship campus is Department of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering. Degree options in the Department include a common education, where students can earn a double degree in engineering and public policy. Both master and doctoral students can choose from concentrations such as geotechnical, transport or construction.
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
The University of Michigan has a unique program to prepare engineers with a global vision. Undergraduate students can search Engineering Global Leadership Honors program, which allows them to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in one of Michigan’s engineering disciplines in five years.
